COMPUTATIONAL METHODS TO DETERMINE THE COMPOSITION OF MAGMAS ASSOCIATED WITH MAGMATIC SULFIDE DEPOSITS

LI, Chusi, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Indiana University, 1001 E. 10th Street, Bloomington, IN 47408

Two computational methods that are important for the determination of the composition of mafic magmas from which Ni-Cu-PGE deposits are generated are reviewed in this presentation. These are (1) estimation of liquid composition for an olivine orthocumulate and (2) estimation of primary magma composition from a fractionated liquid. An example of how the computational results may be used to evaluate the role of fractional crystallization and addition of external sulfur in triggering sulfide saturation in mafic magma is also provided.
