LESSONS FROM A LEGEND – FRANK SCHWARTZ (Invited Presentation)
Dr. Frank W. Schwartz is a revolutionary scientist and philosopher. Frank’s leaps of knowledge, his unpredictability, and his willingness to vigorously pursue new topics have greatly improved our understanding of the physical and chemical controls in groundwater. His approach to his science, as evidenced by the evolution of his career, exemplifies how we should not be complacent in our career path, but be continually looking for “new cheese”. Frank’s critical (and occasionally blunt) assessments of the state and direction of groundwater science has caused many of us to reassess our thoughts on the science of groundwater and its (and our) future in the discipline. In addition to being a revolutionary scientist and philosopher, Frank is an outstanding educator and mentor; his coauthored textbooks are key resources in the teaching of groundwater science internationally. This presentation will look back at Dr. Schwartz’s long and storied career and highlight how he made our (and my) science better while making us all better scientists.
