BEGINNING BYSTANDER INTERVENTION STRATEGIES

We’ve all been there: someone in the workplace says or does something that is jaw-droppingly inappropriate. Most people freeze in the moment and only think of a response later. Sometimes that response is appropriate and helpful. This leaves most such incidents unaddressed, or addressed inadequately, allowing the behaviors to persist. Bystander Intervention allows us to practice how to respond in the moment to ensure the safety of the target(s) and, when appropriate, follow up to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. The first step is becoming aware of types of implicit bias and microaggressions so we can recognize even subtle inappropriate behavior. The next step is to have policies and plans in place to prevent, and mitigate, uncivil behaviors before or as they emerge. We will introduce and practice in-the-moment possible responses as well as follow-up tactics to improve workplace climate. We encourage participants to bring their own experiences to the session, to share what’s worked and what has not. Everyone has the right to a safe, inclusive, welcoming and productive workplace.

We have more possibilities in each moment than we realize. – Thich Nhat Hanh
