VERTICAL INTEGRATION OF UNIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY

SCHULTERBRANDT GRAGG III, Richard D., School of the Environment, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, FL 32307

As you know may know dialogue is afoot as to the relevancy and return on investment of public higher education. This presentation will explore the idea of ' Vertical Integration of University and Community' in the context of reframing how the 1890 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) conduct their land grant mission. Designated in 1890 via the 2nd Morrill Act, these institutions established public higher education access to African-Americans. The 1864 Morrill Act established the inaugural land grant systems comprised of white institutions. Key components of the land-grant system are agricultural experiment stations and Cooperative Extension Service. This discussion is centered, around the idea of 1890 land-grant institutions moving from agriculture and cooperative extension to the vertical integration of food and community engagement learning and practice across the curriculum.
