COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT THROUGH USE OF THE BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM

ZERQUERA, Thomas, Earth and Environment, Florida International University, Miami, FL 33199

A brownfield is an area that the state or county wants to expand and increase development but is complicated due to the likely presence of contaminants. A brownfield receives benefits such as tax credits, low interest loans, and fee waivers in order to create incentive and opportunity for redevelopment. Laws concerning brownfields differ for federal, state, and local governments. As such, EPA rules will be used and shown how they were implemented in the state of Florida. Groundwater and/or soil samples are vital to the determination of what path the site should take and tables showing the samples taken from the site in relation to the Cleanup Target Levels or CTLs will be shown. The Brownfields Program has proven itself to be very successful and leads to several remarkable stories, one of which will be the case study.
