CREATING COMPLEX AND ACCESSIBLE EXHIBITS AT BRYN MAWR COLLEGE: MAKING GEOLOGY RELEVANT
This project examines how we communicate complex geologic concepts using visual, physical displays with minimal text. The project will examine best practices for museum exhibit assembly, and will execute them in the creation of a display on color in minerals for the Park Science Center at Bryn Mawr College. Because the exhibit will be displayed in a science building that many non-science majors walk through, accessibility is key. Part one of the exhibit will address overarching concepts about mineral coloration. Part two will build off of the general concepts from part one and answer more complex questions about coloration, such as variance. The public is drawn to the complexity and range of colors in minerals, and their beauty has inspired songs, TV shows, and more in pop culture. Showing how science and art connect helps keep the public interested in geology and helps keep science relevant.
