A BRIEF ANALYSIS OF THE GENERAL SITUATION AND PRICE INFLUENCING FACTORS OF PINK AND BLUE DIAMONDS IN AUCTION MARKET

In recent years, pink and blue diamonds have become the focus of people’s attention in jewelry market. Aiming to analyze the present auction market of pink and blue diamonds, this thesis collects auction data of seven auction houses at home and abroad from 2008 to 2018. Based on these data, it thoroughly analyzes the auction situation in several important cities and the present auction situation of colored diamonds in China. Referring to the methodology of previous studies, this thesis analyzes the price influencing factors of pink and blue diamonds, such as color grade, modifying colors, clarity, carat weight and shape, based on data from seven auction houses: Sotheby's, Christie's, Poly, Beijing Council, China Guardian, Phillips, Bonhams. Comparing with previous data, it demonstrates a few regular laws and draws the following main conclusions.

First, from the present auction situation and tendency, China has potential for becoming the most significant market of colored diamonds, because if we compared the number of auction companies, we could find that China has been developing rapidly in terms of colored diamonds auction, though China is a latecomer to the sector of auction. Second, based on the analysis of auction’s sites, quantity, and quality, it can be concluded that Hong Kong and Geneva are the two auction sites that deserve the most attention in the global jewelry auction.Third, color is still the most important factors affecting jewelry price, because even with the interference of other variables, color grade still influences the price of pink and blue diamonds regularly with a much bigger impact than clarity grade and other factors. In contrast, modifying colors' impacts on the auction price of pink and blue diamonds, both negatively and positively, tend to be declining, which suggests the enhancement of overall value of these two kinds of diamonds. However, a few modifying colors’ impact on price has changed a lot. Fourth, the carat weight has roughly positive impact on the price of pink and blue diamonds, but the extent to which its impact is still unclear. Fifth, according to the analysis of shape’s influence on the price, the circle usually has the most positive impact on the price amongst all shapes, and some shapes’ impact on the price are similar to each other, such as oval cut and emerald cut as well as pear cut and marquise cut, thus future researches should combine cut grade and shape to analyze their impact on the price.
