The Ediacaran-aged ellipsoid fossil Aspidella terranovica is widely known from a number of sites, most prolifically in eastern North America. We have analyzed several examples gathered as loose blocks from a construction site near the Hingham Harbor outcrop in Massachusetts. Upon polishing, we noticed features that immediately suggested movement of the basal discs up through the sediment, perhaps in response to rapid deposition. Could Aspidella represent the beginnings of animal locomotion?
