IMPORTING PRINT CITATIONS INTO ZOTERO: NEW CITATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES IN GEOSCIENCE LIBRARIANSHIP

PROCIOUS, Aaron and GOWEN, Elise D., University Libraries, Pennsylvania State University, 105 Deike Building, University Park, PA 16801

While the popular perception that “everything is now online” persists, the fact remains that a large percentage of print scientific books have not been digitized, and their bibliographic information has not been converted to usable electronic citations. This is especially significant in fields like geology, where print resources can remain relevant for decades or centuries, and older materials and the works they cite are still of strong interest to today’s researchers.

In light of this, the Earth and Mineral Sciences Library at Penn State has been approached by faculty about the possibility of converting the print bibliographies from select into electronic bibliographies in the citation management tool Zotero. This presentation will discuss the technical and logistical challenges of providing this service, the potential for faculty outreach in offering this service on a broader scale in a geosciences library, and how to streamline the process and make the newly produced electronic citations more findable for future users.
