FROM KNOWING COMES CARING, AND FROM CARING COMES CHANGE

RAYMO, Maureen E., Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia U., 61 ROUTE 9W, Palisades, NY 10964

Sea levels, bathtubs, geoids, gravity, isostasy, dynamic topography—talking about sea level has gotten a whole lot more complicated in the last decade….and a lot more interesting. Fortunately, both scientists and the general public intuitively grasp many of the physical concepts behind sea level rise (and fall) allowing the conversation to move quickly from understanding the science, to action on the part of individuals. We are all asking ourselves, and as scientists we are often asked, “what can I do to help solve the climate crisis?”. In this talk I will review recent advances in sea level science and share some thoughts on how I have been inspired to go from research, to conversations, to decisions.
