CAPILLARY FLOW OF FLOW IN SEDIMENTARY BASINS (Invited Presentation)

CATHLES III, Lawrence M., Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Cornell University, 2134 Snee Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853

Flow in sedimentary basins changed forever when organic carbon burial became substantial enough to generate significant non-aqueous fluids and produce capillary seals. Since then flow could be shockingly dynamic, non-linear, and self-regulated on a scale so large that is it is easy to overlook. We know this from resource observations. How observations lead to these conclusions, why the results might be expected, and the broad implications for resources and future research will be discussed.
