A LARGE DEVONIAN ECHINOID FROM THE ONONDAGA LIMESTONE OF WESTERN NEW YORK

MCKENZIE, Scott C. and SESLER, Morgan, Geology, Mercyhurst University, 501 East 38th St., Erie, PA 16546-0001

In June of 1990, a large echinoid was recovered from the Devonian Onondaga Limestone, during a collecting open house at the Buffalo (Federal) Crushed Stone quarry in Cheektowaga, Erie County, New York. The specimen was on a huge boulder that had been recently quarried. The best inference is that it was from the Edgecliff Member. The fossil was recognized and carefully salvaged by Bruce and Ruth Banick, experienced independent paleontologists. Through their generosity we announce their discovery and begin examination of this unusual and rare specimen.
