Bear Gulch is a section of the Mississippian Heath Formation (Fig 1) located in central Montana (Grogan & Lund, 2002). The fossils found are of Paleozoic age and include a wide variety of fishes, invertebrates and algae (Grogan & Lund, 2002). The superb fossil preservation is hypothesized to be the result of asphyxiation and rapid burial at the same time (Grogan & Lund, 2002). The geological situation resembles the Solnhofen Limestone in Germany with similar flinz/faule lithology and sedimentary structures. The chief source of information is the fossils. Our purpose here is to familiarize people with the fossil taxa found in the Bear Gulch Limestone.
