To enhance learning in informal environments, [environmental science centers (4) and libraries (7)], our interdisciplinary team has designed, developed, and pilot-tested an immersive virtual reality (iVR) learning game for STEM education. The game is designed to use either with Oculus Go headsets or desktop VR. Players learn about Earth science, cultural history, and environmental issues at 9 sites in our watershed for enhanced engagement and improved spatial thinking. Immersive VR provides a sense of authentic immersion and the presence of being physically at specific geographic locations. The watershed concept serves as a powerful learning tool that can motivate people of all ages to learn about environmental impacts and engage in environmentally responsible behaviors to impact all of humanity. The iVR technology allows for supports and is designed to provide improved access for STEM-related content for both non-native English speakers and those with mobility disabilities or transportation issues who are physically unable to visit watershed locations because they are either inaccessible or dangerous. We use a series of game design principles to assist diverse learners. These include navigational and map aids, audio and color options for visually-impaired, highlighting key vocabulary text and a glossary. UI elements such as buttons, 360˚ videos, narrating avatars, a trip journal, historic and contemporary photos, natural sounds and evaluative exercises provide the learner with interactive control of the user experience in a safe environment to increase engagement and learning.
