EMBARKING CHANGE: CO-CREATING A GREEN CAMPUS

ANDERS, Tania-Maria, RUIZ, Sophia, SHEN, Anne and SHIN, Jaeseung Andy, Earth Sciences and Astronomy, Mt. San Antonio College, 1100 N. Grand Ave, Walnut, CA 91789

Over the last couple of years sustainability has become a buzzword on campuses across the nation. At Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) we embarked on the journey of creating a green, sustainable campus as a joint effort between students, faculty, staff, and the administration.

In 2014, Mt. SAC President Dr. William Scroggins signed a resolution pushing the college towards a path of Carbon Neutrality. As signatories of the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), Mt. SAC committed to the development of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan to lower net greenhouse gas emissions campus-wide. The Climate Action Plan was completed in 2018 and a Climate Commitment Implementation Committee, on which students, faculty, and staff serve, was formed. This committee is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the ACUPCC Carbon Commitment by raising awareness about climate change and ways to implement cultural and institutional change. We will be sharing some results of this work.

Additionally, we will be sharing some of the wealth of information and ideas, including strategies for infusing sustainability into the classroom, brought back from the 2019 AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) Conference. Three students, representing our Associated Student Body and Student Clubs, together with Mt. SAC’s Sustainability Coordinator attended the Conference.

We have a long way to go, but have taken our first steps.

Join us as we share our journey. We hope to inspire you and get inspired by you!
