SCIENTISTS AS CIVIC PARTICIPANTS: ENGAGING IN LOCAL DECISION-MAKING
The events of the past two years, from COVID-19 to extreme climate-related weather events, have highlighted the importance of science for local decision-making. Too often, however, scientists and engineers bypass local engagement when seeking to participate in policy processes. Local governments play critical roles in shaping and implementing STEM-related policy solutions, and they can provide high-impact pathways for individuals with STEM backgrounds to make a difference. These include serving on local advisory bodies or delivering public comments. In this presentation, Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally will provide an introduction to opportunities for effective local engagement.
