MOBILISING GEOSCIENCE TO DELIVER THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS – REFLECTIONS FROM 'GEOLOGY FOR GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT' ACTIVITIES
Geology for Global Development is a UK-based charity, working internationally to help geoscientists contribute to sustainable and resilient communities, as expressed in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our work includes research and analysis, which we use to inform policy engagement and education and training activities. In this talk, we profile examples of these activities, including recent projects with partners on access to geoscience experts and data by small NGOs in eastern Africa and the alignment of geoscience higher education in Kenya with their sustainable development objectives. In the context of our work, we reflect on (i) the opportunities that ‘Theory of Change’ methods provide for contributing to impact by helping deliver outputs that are useful, useable, and used, and (ii) the need for ongoing reflection on ethics and equity.
