MARINE VOLCANOES AND SEAFLOOR ERUPTIONS

GEORGEN, Jen, Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529

Interested in volcanic eruptions? How about eruptions that happen in the world’s vast ocean basins? Marine volcanoes create the sea floor, form islands like Hawaii and Iceland, and can affect global climate systems. This presentation will discuss examples of different types of marine volcanoes and their impact on geological oceanography. It will also talk about ways that scientists study undersea eruptions, including expeditions on oceanographic research vessels, drilling into the rocks of the seafloor, and diving in deep-sea submersibles.
