SUPPORTING FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY EDUCATION INITIATIVES

MILLER, Christy, Barr Engineering Co., Salt Lake City, UT 84101

My path to becoming a geologist was non-linear. I changed my major multiple times, moved out west, and was then unable to find a field geologist position for several years. I started in consulting as an administrative assistant and forged my path to become a geologist. A reason I was able to enter the technical workforce was involvement in professional societies: both in college and at present. Throughout my involvement in societies like the Geologic Society of America, Pittsburgh Geological Society, Women in Mining, and Society of Mining Metallurgy and Exploration Mineral Education Coalition I’ve learned that focusing on students is key for professional societies success. Women in Mining and the Mineral Education Coalition have been able to reach kindergarten to college level students through education initiatives like volunteering in classrooms and at STEM fests, creating mineral boxes, mentorship programs, hosting resume and interviewing sessions, and a student presentation night. Through these initiatives, we have learned STEM education is important inside and outside of the classroom and is achievable in any stage of schooling showing that support for students from professional societies in any industry is important. This talk highlights initiatives that Women in Mining have pursued, wins and losses, and opportunities to create building blocks for a sustainable future for students and our workforces.
