ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND CRITICAL MINERALS, A DOWNSTREAM SUPPLY CHAIN PERSPECTIVE ON CURRENT US POLICIES

WEST, Dan, Seattle, WA 98116

Rivian is an independent American manufacturer of all-electric pickups, SUVs and delivery vans, and has been ramping up production during this pivotal time in US climate politics. In recent years, Congress has passed large climate bills that will help the United States accelerate its decarbonization efforts across all economic sectors and meet commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement. These congressional actions are reshaping global supply chains in dramatic ways, particularly in the automotive sector. The transportation sector is the largest contributor to global warming emissions in the United States, and light-duty passenger vehicles comprise the largest share of those emissions. With battery electric vehicles (EVs) becoming mainstream and offering a solution for reducing this large emissions source, demand for critical minerals is growing, spurring new policy conversations around the EV supply chain. Rivian provides its perspective on how it is adapting to this new policy landscape and how certain EV provisions within these bills could affect international and domestic mineral supply chains.
