IDENTIFICATION OF HAMPDEN BASALT VIA GROUND MAGNETIC SURVEY IN AREA OF HIGH INFRASTRUCTURE

VITALE, Donovan, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Western Michigan University, 1903 W Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49008

A ground based magnetic survey was conducted in Glastonbury, Connecticut to discern the location of Hampden Basalt. The magnetic survey utilized a Geometric G858 Magnetometer with dual cesium vapor sensors and a GEM Systems Base Station. Sixteen survey profiles, constituting seven unique kilometers, were carried out over the course of two days. Ground truth provided via physical outcrops and drilling cores was used to better understand the magnetic signal produced by the Hampden basalt. Many survey lines were completed in areas containing high amounts of urban infrastructure that confounded the magnetic signal of Hampden Basalt. Magnetic survey data was analyzed in conjunction with physically observable infrastructure, and depth to bedrock measurements to understand anomalous signals created by infrastructure and dampening effects related to overburden thickness. This survey possesses two key pieces of intellectual merit: (1) a better understanding of the location of Hampden Basalt and (2) a better understanding of the analysis required to make sense of magnetic profiles conducted in areas containing a high amount of urban infrastructure.
