MAKING DIGITAL GEOLOGIC GIS DATA ACCESSIBLE TO DIVERSE USER GROUPS BY PRODUCING MULTIPLE DATA FORMATS

Digital geologic-GIS data and maps are used by planning and policy makers to influence and guide science-based decisions concerning the management and protection of geologic features and resources. In addition, GIS and spatial software continues to evolve, including from non-proprietary open-source efforts.

To ensure that National Park Service Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) digital geologic-GIS data are accessible by diverse user groups, and to keep up with ever-evolving GIS software the GRI publishes its digital geologic-GIS data in multiple GIS data formats. These product formats presently include: 1.) an ESRI file geodatabase with an accompanying ArcMap document for use with ESRI ArcGIS software, 2.) an ESRI file geodatabase and ESRI ArcGIS Pro map file for use with ESRI ArcGIS Pro software, 3.) a KML/KMZ file for use with Google Earth, 4.) a Geopackage file for use with open-source GIS software such as QGIS, and 5.) (planned) an ESRI map service product for use with ESRI online software such as ArcGIS Online (AGOL).

This poster presents an overview of each GRI product format and provides details on how each product format is developed using custom GRI tools and scripts to automate production.
