EARLY CAREER GEOSCIENCE PUBLIC SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES IN FLORIDA

ARTHUR, Jonathan, Executive Office, American Geosciences Institute, 4220 King St., Alexandria, VA 22302

Impacts by natural systems and human interaction, as well as the need for water and mineral resources provide robust geoscience employment opportunities in Florida, and many of these positions are in the public sector. Positions and rewarding careers related to geoscience investigations and the protection and conservation of water resources are primarily found within the state’s five water management districts and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Some local governments also have sizable environmental regulatory programs. It is also noteworthy that the Florida Geological Survey (FGS) is a division within the Florida DEP. The FGS conducts geologic mapping, karst hazard assessment and response, and many other geoscience activities in service to the state.

Many of the above geoscience positions often relate to characterization, monitoring, modeling and regulatory activities that protect the quantity and quality of Florida’s water resources, with an emphasis on groundwater – the principal source of drinking water in Florida. These regulatory activities focus on the design of solid and liquid waste disposal infrastructure, restoration of point- and non-point-source contamination (water and soils), water use and storage, and emphasize ecosystem health, such as springs protection and restoration and projects related to the restoration of the Greater Everglades Ecosystem.

Geologists, geophysicists, hydrologists, geotechnical engineers, and environmental scientists have diverse employment opportunities in Florida. For some of these roles, candidates are well-positioned if they are on a demonstrated professional track by having earned Geologist-in-Training or Engineer-Intern certification. Membership in professional societies and experience through volunteer and paid internships is also helpful toward being a strong job candidate.
