ON MAKING AN IMPACT: CONRAD NEUMANN INSPIRING SCIENCE AND OTHER PEOPLE
Conrad Neumann exemplifies how a professor can to make a meaningful difference in the lives of other people. In the classroom, he taught oceanography in ways that were both engaging and instructive. He simultaneously contributed to scientific knowledge by conducting research that led to new understandings of carbonate sedimentary processes, late Quaternary climate and sea-level history, and a variety of other aspects of the marine environment. These are certainly good and noteworthy accomplishments; yet, they do not fully capture how Conrad impacted his students and friends. There are two fundamental ways that Conrad made lifelong impacts on students and friends: he inspired a creative and joyful approach toward scientific thinking, and he acted toward others in a personal manner that was caring and thoughtful. Examples of each way and their effects will be discussed.
