KEYNOTE | FROM CALORIMETRY TO LATTICE DYNAMICS

NAVROTSKY, Alexandra, Center for Materials of the Universe, Arizona State University, P.O. Box 871604, Tempe, AZ 85287

Nancy Ross and Alex Navrotsky have been colleagues and friends for many years. She came to ASU as a Ph. D student in the early 1980s and we, together with Susan Kieffer, began to integrate thermochemical measurements on high pressure phases with changes in structure, bonding, and lattice dynamics, coining the term “microscopic to macroscopic”. We have worked, separately and together, in various aspects of thermodynamics and lattice dynamics, emphasizing cryogenic as well as high temperature behavior. This presentation emphasizes recent work on porous materials, including zeolites and mesoporous silica, showing how heats of formation, low temperature heat capacities, and X-ray and neutron scattering data come together to build relationships between lattice dynamics on the molecular scale and bulk thermodynamic properties.
