PROJECT ECOSYSTEM: ENHANCING GEOSCIENCE KNOWLEDGE, FOSTERING COMMUNITY, AND WELL-BEING AT UC DAVIS THROUGH FIBER ARTS
In the post-Covid context, the project also provided a creative and therapeutic outlet for UC Davis undergraduates and staff. The decision to utilize yarn and crocheting as the primary technique was grounded in its accessibility and documented positive effects on personal well-being. Crocheting is easy to learn, follows basic patterns and promotes relaxation once basic stitches are mastered.
Over one year, Project Ecosystem engaged 21 participants, including seven who were new to crocheting. Weekly meetings focused on planning the project, teaching crocheting skills to newcomers, and fostering a supportive community atmosphere. One student’s comment during a meeting resonated: "This is the only time during the week that I am really relaxed and not thinking about school." This sentiment underscores the project's role in providing a space for creative expression among students, faculty, and staff.
In conclusion, Project Ecosystem exemplified a successful integration of art, education, and mental well-being within an academic setting. It provides a model for future initiatives aiming to create impactful experiences that benefit both participants and the broader community.
