PROVOKING IDEAS AND DISCUSSION AROUND HOW YOUTH OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT CAN HELP DEVELOP INTEREST IN EARTH SCIENCES (Invited Presentation)

TURNER, Leah, University of Texas - AustinJackson School of Geosciences, 1008 Pine Creek Dr, Pflugerville, TX 78660-2871

The future of geosciences hinges on our ability to inspire and engage the next generation of scientists. Traditional methods of outreach and education, while valuable, may not fully capture the imagination or harness the potential of today's youth. This “pitch” aims to start a meaningful conversation about reimagining our approach to undergraduate and graduate education in the geosciences, with a particular focus on youth outreach and engagement.

We begin with thoughts of a multi-faceted strategy, integrating modern technology, interdisciplinary approaches, and community-based initiatives to foster a deep, lasting interest in geosciences among young students. This talk will explore some innovative approaches, providing a platform for attendees to share their experiences and ideas. Our goal is to collaboratively develop a new vision for recruitment into Earth science that not only excites and engages young minds but also builds a diverse and dynamic future workforce for the geosciences.
