INTEGRATING GENERATIVE AI INTO A GEOSCIENCE CURRICULUM

CLARK, Christine, KOLBUS, Lindsay M. and PORTENGA, Eric, Department of Geography and Geology, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI 48197

Widely available Generative AI has descended like a shock wave on higher education. This technology has faculty questioning their assignments and how to know what work is student-written. While it is tempting to outright forbid the use of Generative AI, this technology is a tool that students will be encountering as they move into the workforce. At Eastern Michigan University, we have been developing both triage and long-term responses to this technology, including the recommendation that it is actively incorporated in coursework. In the Geology program, we have utilized Generative AI in courses both at the 100 and 400-level. These assignments show that students can learn the pros and cons of the technology, giving them an understanding of what the tool is best used for.
