A GALLERY TOUR OF LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND OTHER CREATIVE ENDEAVORS IN GEOSCIENCE AND BIOLOGY (Invited Presentation)
There is evidence from pedagogical research supporting the integration of creative arts in enhancing STEM learning. Student-centered learning experiences that inspire creativity and imagination increase engagement and motivation by encouraging students to visualize, analyze and connect different concepts within and across disciplines through hands-on approaches. These experiences integrating creative arts in science courses lead to enhanced science literacy and scientific communication skills, while boosting students’ confidence and empowering them in pursuing STEM courses and research interests.
This presentation will highlight examples of creative arts projects that I have developed and incorporated into syllabi of undergraduate courses in paleontology, environmental biology, and global climate change. Student feedback supports the effectiveness of these learning experiences and assessments and provides constructive input in developing inclusive and accessible syllabi and learning environments. Additionally, this presentation will include some examples of joyous creative arts projects in which I have taken part.
