This project curriculum explores the intricate dance of Earth's lithospheric plates and its impact on the creation and transformation of land masses across the geologic timescale. Guided by a multidisciplinary approach, our curriculum engages students in a comprehensive study that integrates geological, paleontological, and geophysical perspectives for an introductory level historical geology lab.

The curriculum design emphasizes hands-on activities, interactive simulations, and real-world case studies to foster a deep understanding of the dynamic processes associated with plate tectonics. Students delve into the mechanisms driving plate movements, such as subduction, seafloor spreading, and continental collisions, and examine the resulting geological phenomena, including the formation of mountain ranges, ocean basins, and volcanic arcs.

Pre- and post-assessments qualify student learning to determine if this curriculum enhances student’s grasp of fundamental geological concepts, critical thinking skills, and scientific inquiry. This project contributes to the broader discourse on science education by offering an innovative and engaging curriculum that not only imparts knowledge about Earth's dynamic history but also nurtures a passion for geological exploration. Our findings underscore the importance of integrating dynamic, inquiry-based learning experiences to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the Earth sciences among students, paving the way for future generations of scientifically literate citizens.
