POST-FIRE BANK EROSION STUDY

SANCHEZ, Bryan, Northridge, CA 91330

In Hungry Valley, California (~70 miles north of Los Angeles) the Post Fire erupted in June 15, 2024, and was active for 11 days. The fire burned through the grasslands, shrublands, and woodlands surrounding La Cañada de Los Arboles. Due to the dynamic way the fire burned in this area, and the importance this area has for the local ecology; the area was chosen to be surveyed to determine the amount of bank erosion during a La Niña year. The survey was conducted through the first winter of 2024-2025. This is because soils are most dynamic in the first rainy season post a fire. The survey involved placing GPS points at the bank edge and thalweg. The GPS points were surveyed with the Arrow Gold. The data that was obtained, was processed using ArcGIS Pro. Due to the winter being especially dry, the erosion was contributed to wind and freeze-thaw of the soil.
