THE CENTRAL APPALACHIAN PARTNERSHIP (CAP) FOR CARBON STORAGE DEPLOYMENT

COONEY JOHNSTON, Michele, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Geological Survey, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

The Pennsylvania Geological Survey (PAGS) was one of sixteen projects awarded under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)-0002799: Regional Initiative to Accelerate Carbon Management Deployment, Area of Interest 2 (AOI 2) State Geological Data Gathering, Analysis, Sharing, and Engagement. For FOA-0002799, AOI 2 projects all data collected, and work products developed must be managed and controlled by a State Geologic Survey or analogous organization.

PAGS, along with the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES) and Battelle Memorial Institute (Battelle) created the Central Appalachian Partnership (CAP) for Carbon Storage Deployment to expand upon the unique position of state surveys to help decrease technical barriers to entry that are commonly experienced by operators new to the basin while gaining access to industry-quality datasets to advance states’ knowledge of subsurface geological frameworks. The project goal is to provide locally-tailored technical assistance and enhanced stakeholder engagement around carbon management technologies while fostering and maintaining close engagement with the communities affected by current and proposed carbon capture, transport, and storage infrastructure to facilitate public understanding of the technical aspects of carbon management projects.

PAGS will present a year-end update of this two-year, $1.385 Million effort including a conceptual geologic model for the study area and discussion of how this data will be utilized and shared; new data acquisition including geologic core testing; plans for the creation of a Web-Based Tool to include current and newly acquired data for public consumption; and opportunities for technology transfer and public outreach to share project data with the public.
