Professional Geologists play a critical role in protecting public health, the environment, and natural resources of New York State (NYS). Professional licensure is required for individuals, corporations, and some public entities that perform geologic services such as environmental remediation, geohazard mitigation, or geologic engineering. This presentation by members of the NYS Education Department (NYSED) Board for Professional Engineering, Land Surveying, and Geology, focuses on the education, experience, and examination requirements for professional licensure in NYS to facilitate successful applications and education programs.

Applicants for licensure in NYS must earn a college degree in a geologic discipline, pass qualifying examinations, and obtain five years of practical experience under the supervision of a licensed Professional Geologist. The requirements are specified in NYSED Commissioner’s Regulations. Educational institutions should also consider program content in light of NYS licensure qualifying criteria.

Two examinations for licensure are administrated by the Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG). Most applicants take the Fundamentals of Geology (FG) exam early in their careers. The Practice of Geology (PG) exam is taken after Board approval of applicant’s professional experience.

The applicant’s experience must encompass a broad range of geologic disciplines, demonstrate a sound understanding of geologic principles and their application, show progressive growth beyond entry-level tasks, require independent judgement, and prove readiness to take responsible charge for geologic work. Supervising geologists should mentor applicants with these experience requirements in mind.

The foundation for successful applications and maximum degree/license portability begins at the undergraduate level and is enhanced by a clear understanding – both by applicants and institutions – of the unique rules and regulations governing Professional Geology in NYS.
