Students are a key component of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) mission of promoting scientific progress. Results presented here show historical trends in student funding opportunities. These opportunities include funding mechanisms available to students and faculty members, ranging from support under standard grants to specific opportunities for targeted student groups. At the undergraduate level, we show trends in the research experience for undergraduates (REU) programs and provide context for future opportunities. We highlight the Graduate Research Fellowships Program (GRFP) for students transitioning from undergraduate to graduate school. In preparing students for non-academic careers, we explore the INTERN program within the Division of Earth Sciences that provides core professional competencies and skills outside the traditional boundaries of a university. Finally, we show trends and opportunities to support students leaving graduate school and starting their research careers through Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. Through the NSF portfolio of funded research, students represent the focus of training for broader impact and the intellectual merit workforce conducting NSF-funded research. This presentation aims to provide historical context and future prospects for students interested in fundamental research and careers in the Earth sciences.
