WATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF THE "CAÑO TIBURONES" ESTUARY IN THE VICINITY OF THE ARECIBO WASTE LAND FILL

RIVERA, John, Camuy, PR 00627

The water quality of the “Caño Tiburones” estuary, located near the Arecibo Landfill, was evaluated in this research due to concerns regarding the potential impact of the landfill on the local community, which uses the estuary for recreational activities such as fishing. Thirty-two physiochemical parameters were assessed using colorimetry with EPA-approved LaMotte water testing kits. The primary parameters analyzed include pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, heavy metals and water hardness. Dissolved oxygen was a particular importance, as lower levels may indicate stress on aquatic life, with oxygen depletion potentially leading to fish mortality. Preliminary results showed dissolved oxygen levels below the EPA standards of 6.1ppm and a significant oxygen demand indicated by biochemical oxygen demand testing. Additionally, elevated pH levels and considerable water hardness were observed. This research provides essential data to raise awareness about the potential environmental hazards present in the estuary.
