Rockfall Mitigation along a Historic Rail Line

CROTSLEY, David and BRANDENBERGER, Will, HDR Engineering, Inc., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055

This project focused on rockfall mitigation along a transit line in Massachusetts, characterized by narrow rock cut walls and a mafic dike cross-cutting the site. The corridor also featured a historic keystone arch bridge, adding complexity to the mitigation efforts. The primary mitigation strategy involved the installation of draped wire mesh throughout most of the corridor to stabilize the rock faces and prevent rockfalls. In areas requiring additional reinforcement, reinforced rock nail wall was applied to ensure stability and safety. Overcoming construction challenges was a critical aspect of the project. Poor pull out testing delayed the project and required additional contractor coordination to complete the construction.
