LATE QUATERNARY STRATIGRAPGY AND DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE COASTAL SEDIMENTS IN THE NEOLITHIC SITE(MOONAMNI), EASTERN COAST OF KOREA

A detailed sedimentologic study was conducted in the Neolithic trench sites and deep drilled cores along the Moonamni coastal area, eastern coast of Korea. The main objectives are to establish the Late Quaternary stratigraphy and to interpret the depositional environment of the coastal deposits in the Neolithic sites found along the Holocene coastal dunes. It is considered that the Neolithic sediment units are typical dune deposit showing well-sorted fine sand.

Stratigraphic, sedimentological and paleontological data from three cores (MA1, MA2 and MA3) are used to evaluate the depositional systematic histories of the Moonamni coastal sediments during the late Quaternary. Six different depositional units can be identified from the cores MA1 and MA2, and three units from MA3.

The classified depositional units and the interpretations of environment are summarized as follows in ascending order:

1) Core MA1 Unit : LCU(lower clastic unit) · LOU(lower organic unit) · MCU-L(middle clastic unit-lower) · UOU(upper organic unit) · MCU-U(middle clastic unit-upper) · UCU(upper clastic unit). Interpretations : alluvial-fluvial · nearshore beach-lagoonal · alluvial-fluvial · coastal dune

3) Core MA3 Unit : LCU(lower clastic unit) · MCU-U(middle clastic unit-upper) · UCU(upper clastic unit) Interpretation : fluvial · nearshore beach-lagoonal · alluvial-fluvial.
