S4. History of Geology of Northeastern North America

Gerald M. Friedman, Convener
Paper #
Start Time

8:00 AM
Introduction: Twenty-five years ago I recognized the need for a journal devoted to the history of the earth sciences. In 1982 Ellis Yochelson and I founded the History of Earth Sciences Society and the Journal Earth Sciences History. I was likewise involved in forming the British History of Earth Sciences Society to which John Thackray recruited me. Many of the geological societies have now organized symposia in the history of geology, and the field is flourishing. After 24 years of publication our journal has become sophisticated, as more people seem to be interested in the field
