AN OVERVIEW OF THE NEW EDUCATION STRATEGIC PLANS FOR THE MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM RESEARCH INSTITUTE (MBARI) AND THE OCEAN RESEARCH INTERACTIVE OBSERVATORY NETWORK (ORION) PROGRAM

As the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) prepares to enter into its third decade, education and outreach is becoming a more integral part of the institution. This presentation will discuss the lessons learned over the past 20 years and introduce the new strategic plan that has been developed. The talk will also introduce the newly emerging Ocean Research Interactive Observatory Network (ORION) program and the education strategic planning that has been ongoing over the past year. The importance of education and outreach for both institutions and large programs will be discussed as will the emphasis on developing and maintaining a high level of public interest and interaction.
