THE URGENCY OF SUSTAINABLE COAL

BECK, Robert A., The National Coal Council, Inc, 1730 M Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, rabeck@natcoal.org

This presentation will address the technologies available to manage carbon dioxide emissions and the research needed to develop additional technologies. It will also included a framework for how these technologies could be developed and deployed commercially. It will focus on the broader use of coal and how that use can help meet the environmental goals of the U.S. This will include new electric generation from coal with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, creating pipeline quality substitute natural gas, producing liquid transportation fuels and other innovative uses for coal. The U.S. has an enormous coal reserve, and this presentation will focus on how that resource can be used and still meet the environmental challenges faced by that increased use.
