USING REAL- AND NEAR–REAL-TIME DATA IN THE CLASSROOM

CHARLEVOIX, Donna, RANDOLPH, Gary and HOFFMAN, Martos, The GLOBE Program, P.O. Box 3000, Boulder, CO 80307, charlevo@globe.gov

Since 1995 The GLOBE Program has promoted student scientific research of the Earth's environment. Using GLOBE scientific measurement protocols, students from around the world (currently in 110 countries) have collected over 21 million data on their local environment (Atmosphere and Climate, Hydrology, Soil, Land Cover, and Phenology). Students share these environmental measurements with other GLOBE students, teachers, scientists, and other members of the international GLOBE community (www.globe.gov). Data collected is of scientific quality and are used by scientists in research and peer-reviewed publications.

The GLOBE Program is preparing to launch a Student Climate Research Campaign focused on the collection and use of field data by students around the world to explore and research their local climate. The GLOBE Program is partnering with National Geographic Society to develop a GIS-based data analysis tool (FieldScope) for near real-time data exploration in the classroom. Pilot testing during 2009 and 2010 of FieldScope and guided learning activities has shown that FieldScope provides students with the tools necessary to explore their local environment in nearly real time as well as helps to develop 21st Century Skills necessary for both the next generation of scientists as well as a scientifically literate citizenry. This poster will provide an overview of the tool and a summary of the impacts and results.
