KARST: THE MOVIE - APPLYING THE CREATIVE TALENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS TO A TOPIC IN GENERAL GEOLOGY

MARSHALL, Anita M., Math and Science, Northwest Arkansas Community College, 1 College Drive, Bentonville, AR 72712, astone1@nwacc.edu

A creative group project can be a great way to get students more involved in a specific topic in general geology. In the 2009 fall semester, a topic of interest was assigned to each lab group early in the semester. Students were encouraged to use a creative format to make a presentation to the class at the end of the semester. Grades were assigned on scientific content and accuracy as well as creativity and the ability to hold the class’ interest. The film being presented was the work of a four-person team who combined their talents in video filming and editing, research, writing and music to create the short film KARST: THE MOVIE. The project was filmed on location in a variety of karst settings throughout Northwest Arkansas with a running time of approximately 25 minutes.
