CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON ATLANTIC TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY: INSIGHTS FROM THE PALEOCLIMATE RECORD
I will discuss insights that the paleoclimate record can provide regarding the relationship between climate change and Atlantic tropical cyclone (TC) activity. I will draw upon (a) coastal overwash sediment deposits of past landfalling Hurricane frequency, (b) semi-empirical models of TC behavior driven by paleoclimate reconstructions, and (c) simulated millennial TC histories based on application of downscaling techniques to long-term forced climate model simulations. I will conclude with a discussion of implications for the impacts of future anthropogenic climate change on Atlantic tropical cyclone and hurricane activity.
