BURIED PALEOINDIAN OCCUPATIONS IN THE BIG BEND OF TEXAS: THE GENEVIEVE LYKES DUNCAN SITE (41BS2615)

CLOUD, William A. and MALLOUF, Robert J., Center for Big Bend Studies, Sul Ross State University, Box C-71, Alpine, TX 79832, wacloud@sulross.edu

The recent discovery of a deeply buried site on the 02 Ranch, with a series of stratified occupations from the Early Paleoindian through Middle Archaic periods, is providing new and significant insights into the earliest inhabitants and ancient environments of the region. Importantly, the investigation has provided the earliest radiocarbon date yet secured for humans in the region, at ca. 11,000 years ago. This presentation provides an overview of information gathered during preliminary investigations of the site by Center for Big Bend Studies archaeologists.
