3-D VISUALISATION AT THE BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
Mankind relies heavily on the subsurface for energy, minerals, waste repositories and freshwater. Exploitation for these commodities within the zone of human interaction, increases the need for modern geologists to map, visualise and query the subsurface in three-dimensions. Additionally environmental change is putting pressure on our environment, so the prediction of natural processes such as landslide occurrence and groundwater flow is becoming increasingly important.
These process models require rigorous conceptualisation of the subsurface, increasingly in the form of 3-dimensional geological models. This digital poster will present a range of tools deployed at the British Geological Survey to build, conceptualise, visualise and disseminate geological models to stakeholders. These include browser-based model viewers, model building software such as Gocad and GSI3D, 3DPDFs and the high-end visualisation tool Geovisionary.
