MAKING DIGITAL GEOLOGIC MAPS USEFUL TO CITIZENS AND STUDENTS

SCHMIDT Jr., Martin F., Science Dept, McDonogh School, 8600 McDonogh Rd, PO Box 380, Owings Mills, MD 21117, mschmidt@mcdonogh.org

Citizens always could buy and carry paper geologic maps, though most people don't, often because they're not sure how geology relates to places and landforms they know. However, digital geologic maps, especially as layers on satellite imagery, can make the geology "come alive" for even non-geologists. One method can be web maps, in various viewers or in maps constructed in platforms like ArcGIS Online, including 2D maps, 3D maps, and story maps. Another way is to georeference geologic maps in Google Earth, then overlay park and trail maps, so hikers can see in 3D the geology and related landforms they will traverse. This poster will show some examples of these uses, and perhaps do so in a digital poster if available.
