IMPACTS OF GEOCORPS INTERN IN EDUCATION, RECLAMATION, AND GEOLOGIC ANALYSE IN CUSTER GALLATIN NATIONAL FOREST, MT

KAPLAN, Jenna M., GeoCorps, Custer Gallatin National Forest, 6811 Highway 212, Red Lodge, MT 59068, JKaplan@mtech.edu

GCI wrote, scheduled, and presented interpretive geologic talks of the Beartooth Mountains consisting of overall geologic history, spot specific geologic interpretation, and effects of glaciation covering the area to local and regional groups, school children, and the general public. GCI developed interpretive geologic brochures, web-based geology audio tours, geology sign & display information, geology-related news articles, and geology publications for the Custer Gallatin National Forest. This required academic research, field mapping of geologic and paleontologic features, compiling information for the public, and installing signs.

GCI assisted in karst resource inventory and management. GCI located and entered cave systems to monitor biologic, geologic, and hydrologic resources. GCI also aided in monitoring mining activities and abandoned mine reclamation to ensure that operators comply with operating plans and that disturbed sites and access roads are fully reclaimed.

The ramification of the GCI consisted of many forms of geologic education, collection and analyzation of field data, support of ongoing Forest Plan revision, and the completion of internal USFS monitoring and assessment reports and management recommendations.
