Turtle T.H.i.S. (Teens Helping in the Seashore) is a citizen science research project which engages local youths, middle, high school and collegiate students, interns, National Park Service staff, and scientists. Students participating collect light measurements at sea turtle nesting sites on Gulf Coast beaches, contributing to park science and research. The project was designed to cultivate environmental stewardship and awareness amongst members of the local community. Turtle T.H.i.S. also serves as an employment ladder, recruiting and mentoring students interested in pursuing STEM careers within the National Park Service or other land management agencies. Participation in citizen science raises conservation and preservation awareness in Gulf Island National Seashore while providing a valuable, hands-on research experience for youth involved.
