Students create videos using screencasting technology in introductory hybrid and online geology courses. These videos increase student participation by engaging active learning strategies. They also increase accountability and provide a useful tool for assessment, since every video is unique. A exploratory study was conducted to determine the effect the videos had on student perceptions of the online environment, as well as their perceived interest in the topic. Students reported increased interest and confidence in topics where videos were assigned.
