Since 2014, volunteer research has been examining the Coleraine Formation of late Cretaceous age, under the banner of the Hill Annex Paleontology Project. The Hill Annex Mine State Park runs a seasonal fossil tour program at a historical open pit iron mine. Centered on the western side of the Mesabi Iron Range, this is one of a multitude of localities exposing these late Cretaceous deposits. In conjunction with the pursuit of additional scientific evidence, the Project aims to provide a field exposure for Science Museum of Minnesota Paleontology volunteers and engage the local community about this unique resource. A second full field season has grown our collection in a multitude of ways as we’ve pressed forward to expand the survey with new opportunity. The best laid plans can go in unexpected directions. Catch an update to our progress on the science, the outreach, and our drive to unearth support.
